What are the acceptance rates like? Admissions?
« on: July 31, 2007, 02:51:00 PM »
For the top I/O Psy. Ph.D. programs and other reputable programs? Also, which are the top and reputable programs?
I always planned on pursuing Clinical, but now I might be scared off by the ridiculously high competition and low acceptance rates.  :(
Is I/O any better? Also, since it is a Ph.D. program, is it safe to assume admissions focus on an applicant's undergraduate research experience and letters of rec.?  :-
Thanks to everyone in advance.

Go to SIOP and browse around. They have information on PhD programs. I'd say the focus is on GRE and GPA, research experience and letters usually count less. But this varies from program to program.

Depends what schools you are applying to, but for the good ones acceptance rate is somewhere between 5-10%.

Acceptance rates vary from program to program depending upon how highly rated they are and how many applicants/openings they have. Top programs are very competitive and require high GPA/GRE plus outstanding letters, personal statement, and research experience. Not so top programs will be easier. The SIOP website gives an idea of GPA/GRE by program. I doubt I/O is easier than clinical. But your interests should dictate where you apply, and not ease of admission. If you are interested in clinical, there are lots of ways to pursue those interests, including clinical psychology, counseling psychology, and a variety of other human-service fields, such as rehabilitation counseling, social work, etc.
