Swiss Girl confused
« on: August 17, 2008, 07:29:00 PM »
Hi everybody!

I am really starting to get confused with these I/O psychology universities. If you belive rankings, then the University od Michigan Ann Arbor is the way to go. But if I visit the homepage I cannot even find the I/O department!!  :-

Minnessota sounds good too, but I am not sure.. All the "big" universities (Harvard, Yale, Stanford), that are know here in Switzerland do not seem to offer I/O programms, do they?

I ve recently reached my masters degree in psychology and am now looking to find the best possible masters programm, I d love it to be in the U.S!

Do any of you  know how to apply, or have experience on applying to universities as a foreigner?

Thank you for your help  ;)

hi anna!

the Michigan site is really hard to navigate, and i couldn't come up with any evidence that they had an i/o program. maybe someone else could find it. or call or email someone within the department for info.

as far as Minnesota goes, well - they are pretty much the bee"s knees as far as their i/o prog. but they are very hard to get into, and they have a continuous hurdle system that could kick you out onto the street if you don"t keep your performance at or above their ridiculously high standards. the ivys really don"t have any kind of edge over non-ivy schools except that they will usually have some kind of ability to pay not a consideration in selection policy, which means that if you get in, your funding is taken care of.

with regard to the rankings, make sure that you are looking at the bases on which the rankings are listed. sometimes schools are ranked on faculty publications, sometimes student satisfaction, etc. you want to make sure that you are choosing your school because of things that are important to you. those rankings get really confusing. use the ranking lists to check programs out, but don"t write off programs that aren't listed. my school has a great masters program in i/o, but due to its size it doesn't get favorably ranked. i love my school and my faculty team, and i"m not leaving until it"s time for my phd. i hope some of this helps, and good luck.

Anna Maria,

Maybe you mean Michigan State University? They have an  I/O program.

More info on grad programs can be found on the SIOP website and go to students I think

Also, check out Professor Paul E. Spector's I/O Psychology website

I'm also an international student and Univ of South Florida (also a top program) admits international students (for the PhD). However, I'd recommend applying to a PhD program, especially if you want to remain in the US. PhD=more opportunities

Let me know if you have other questions
