Getting a PhD in I/O Psychology---Is it worth it?
« on: May 15, 2007, 11:05:00 PM »
Hello Everyone:

I'm considering going for my PhD in I/O in the next 3 months.  I was wondering if anyone has obtained their degree from an Online University like Walden, Capella or some other school.  Also, what has been your experience since graduation with obtaining a career and what is your advice to someone who is in my shoes?  Thanks for your opinion.  Marc

Marcus,

I got my Master's degree from Capella and while the program was challenging and convenient, I would caution you that one important thing this program lacks (as may also be the case with other online universities) is a job placement service. I earned my degree two years ago and I'm still trying to really break into the field. If you already have ample connections or are already working in the field in some capacity, then this may not be an issue to you. But if you were like me and are just getting back into the field having worked in another industry without I/O connections, then you may experience the same uphill struggle that I have. Of course, you may not at all, but I just wanted to give you this bit of very important information to consider.

Hello Lisa:  Thank you very much for your warning.  I truly needed that.  And like you, I do not have the I/O experience nor the connections and it will probably be more beneficial for me if I waited on obtaining this degree.  You have helped me in the most sincere way.  May God Bless You in all that you put your hands too.

Hi Marcus,

Thanks for your kind words. And I didn't mean to totally discourage you from looking into the program at Capella; I just wanted to enlighten you as to my experience. As I mentioned you may have a completely different experience.

Whatever you decide, good luck!   :D
