Consulting in I/O
« on: February 19, 2009, 04:13:02 PM »
Hello,

I have a question about the process of consulting in I/O. I understand there is research involved in the process of helping a business. But I enjoy consulting/counseling/troubleshooting/teaching way more than research. Is there a particular area of I/O one could start in that lends itself towards the people-oriented aspects of I/O consulting?

Hi Kirk,

You may want to explore Executive Coaching. It is pretty much 1 to 1 coaching with executives relating to leadership activities and performance.

Here is a definition from the executive coaching handbook found HERE: "Executive coaching is an experiential and individualized leader development process that builds a leader’s capability to achieve short- and long-term organizational goals. It is conducted through one-on-one interactions, driven by data from multiple perspectives, and based on mutual trust and respect. The organization, an executive, and the executive coach work in partnership to achieve maximum impact."

Welcome to PIOP and good luck!

Sara,

Thanks and I am going to investigate Executive Coaching. University of the Rockies has a program under that name. But if one were interested in doing this, obviously a consultant is a person with experience and knowlege in the field, and he would need to start somewhere in the profession. Could a person start somewhere with a masters in I/O in consulting? Or would I need to start somewhere different in order to accuulate the knowlege and experience needed? It sounds like something I would love to do...
