Bad Boys and Girls Gone Wild: Is A Criminal Background A Dealbreaker?

dating a criminal

When it comes to dating, a lot of people have dealbreakers. For instance, a lot of women won't date a guy who doesn't have a job. A lot of men won't date a woman who wears too much makeup. Everyone's dealbreakers vary, but a very common one is having a criminal background. Both men and women agree that they wouldn't date someone with a criminal record. We'd like to argue this dealbreaker and say that when it comes to criminal records, don't count everyone out.

By no means at all are we suggesting you date someone who has committed a serious crime. This includes animal abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence or armed robbery. This also includes murder, obviously…but are there really a lot of murderers out there in the dating scene? Serious crimes are dealbreakers. People who commit these crimes are dangerous and of the lowest moral character. We also think you should steer clear of people with a minor, but lengthy criminal background. Maybe they've committed minor crimes…but they've done so habitually. This shows that they are creatures of habit – bad habit. It also shows that they fail to learn lessons. So when is it okay to date someone with a criminal background?

We think it is okay to date someone with a criminal background if they have one, maybe two minor offenses. So what is considered minor. If they were arrested one time for having some marijuana on them, this is minor. If they were arrested one time for underage drinking, this is minor. These are mistakes that nearly all people make in their youth and it shouldn't affect their dating life as an adult.

With all that said, obviously it is your choice to date whomever you want. If someone's criminal past does not make you uncomfortable, go for it. If their minor criminal background bothers you, stay away. At the end of the day, you need to do what is best for you and whatever makes you happy!
