If you've ever seen the show 90 Day Fiancé, you've probably wondered how legitimate international relationships are. The show follows various people who all fell in love with someone who lives in another country. We see some relationships fail, while others succeed, but all of them encounter endless hurdles. The series can't help but make you wonder: Can you really date someone who lives in another country?
In our opinion, it is nearly impossible to date someone who lives in another country. Long-distance relationships are hard enough when you're in the same country. Imagine how hard it is when you're in another country. If you're in a relationship with someone in another state, it is much easier to visit them more often. While these relationships are still hard, it is easier to make them work than making international ones work. When you're in a relationship with someone in another country, it is much harder to visit them often, making it harder to sustain the relationship.
Another obstacle that international couples face are cultural differences. While cultural differences may not be a dealbreaker for some couples, they are difficult for other couples to get past. When someone has been raised in a different country than you, they have an entirely different worldview. They will likely have a poor understand of your country and culture, and you will likely have a poor understanding of theirs.
One of the biggest problems that comes up when dating someone in another country is planning for the future. How do you decide which country to live in? Who will have to quit their job and move away from their family? These are difficult decisions to make and very serious commitments to ask of a person. These decisions ultimately lead to the demise of many long-distancer relationships.
With all that said, as 90 Day Fiance shows, there are many couples who make their long-distance relationship work. At the end of the day, it depends on how committed you are to one another and how much you are willing to sacrifice for the relationship. If you ask us though, we'd still suggest dating someone who lives close to you!
