Most of us have seen an episode or two…or a hundred of the hit show Sex and the City. For those of us who live in small towns, it gave us a glimpse of what it's like to be single and dating in a big city. We saw how stressful and hectic it could be, but we also saw how spontaneous and exciting it could be, too. Dating in a big city is an entirely different endeavor than small-town dating. To give you some more insight, we've put together eight things that anyone who has dated in a big city knows to be true:
1. You rarely see the same person twice.
Since there's so many people in the city, you rarely see the same person twice. This is great if you don't want to run into an ex. It's not great if you want to run into the cute guy you saw at the coffee shop on a random day.
2. You meet some real unique people.
Big cities are full of all kinds of freaks and geeks. Okay, maybe that's not the nicest way of saying it. Let's call them “interesting characters”. Dating in a big city means you're going to meet some real weirdos – so be prepared.
3. Public transportation is a great way to meet people.
Sure, the subway is crowded and smells like urine, but it gives you a great chance to meet someone. It's real easy to make small talk with an attractive stranger when you trapped in a subway car together.
4. You'll have to deal with roommates and cramped apartments.
Living in a big city isn't cheap. When you start dating someone new, odds are they're living in an apartment the size of a closet…with three roommates. Dating in a big city is certainly not for the claustrophobic.
5. There's never a shortage of date ideas.
One of the huge pros about dating in a big city is that there's always something interesting to do. No matter what you or your potential partner enjoys, odds are there's something going on that will be fun to do on a date.
6. Dating someone on the other side of the city is out of the question.
It might sound reasonable. At least they still live in the same city. …no. Dating in a big city means your new beau needs to live within walking distance. No one wants to take the subway or pay taxi fare any more than they have to.
7. Work is the number one priority.
For a lot of people living in the city, most of their time is consumed by work. Someone has to pay for that closet-sized apartment! If you can't deal with someone's job occupying their time, you might find dating in a big city difficult.
8. You need to have thick skin.
If you're planning on dating in a big city, you'll need to toughen up. Like we mentioned earlier, you're going to meet a lot of interesting characters. Some of those characters will steal your heart…and then shatter it. You have to learn how to take a loss and move forward fast.
