As we all know, we live in very divided political times. Well, the country has always been pretty divided, but never as much as it is today. Friendships have ended over our current political climate. Family members have become estranged over our current political climate. Things are so heated that it brings up the age-old question: Can you date someone with different political views?
To be perfectly blunt with you, we're gonna answer that question with a hard “no.” You cannot date someone with different political views than yourself. Well, technically you can date someone with different political views, but we're going to tell you upfront: it's not going to last.
At this point, you're probably wondering what is so inherently wrong with dating someone who has different political views as yourself. To be honest, there is nothing wrong with it! Everyone is perfectly entitled to believe whatever they want and feel however they feel about really anything in the world. With that said, it's hard to truly have a healthy relationship with someone who holds fundamentally different beliefs than you do. For instance, maybe you are a die-hard liberal who is pro-choice when it comes to the topic of abortion. Say you are dating a strict conservative who is adamantly pro-life. Imagine that you become pregnant when dating said conservative, and you decide that you are going to have an abortion. Needless to say, this is an issue that is going to cause a serious uproar in your relationship and will likely lead to the end of it. This is just one of the many, many topics that you would disagree with your partner about. Throw in there gun control, gay marriage, healthcare, police brutality, and more. These issues are way too serious to have a long-lasting relationship with someone who feels the complete opposite of you in regards to any of them.
Sure, people with different political beliefs can get along, but a relationship entails so much more than just getting along. Don't most of us get into a relationship with the hopes of staying together forever? Now, can you really stay with a person from the opposite side of the political aisle forever. Imagine the civil wars that would ensue in your household with every election forever. Imagine arguing over whether you're watching CNN or Fox News forever. Imagine the yearly debate over sending your friends and family “Happy Holidays” cards or “Merry Christmas” cards forever. You catch our drift now, right?
In such politically tumultuous times, we obviously encourage civility. Everyone on both sides of the spectrum should try to get along and work together for the greater good of the country. However, that doesn't mean we can sugarcoat reality for anyone. Sustaining a relationship between two people with drastically different political beliefs is just way too hard for any normal human being and we're not going to recommend it!
